2012-09-09 - NJ Fall Tuna Bite Update

Big Eye Tuna FishingNew Jersey Fall Tuna Bite, Whites, Sails, and Dolphin too

Finally, the fish have started turning on at night.  After a slow night Thursday, we made a move to the north and offshore and it paid off.  Once we found the fish, we had pretty steady action for most of the evening.  No huge numbers, but we only had 2 gentleman on board with us to fight the fish.  The fights were pretty long and the yellowfin relatively large.  We were short drifting a temperature break in about 500 fathoms that was holding the fish.  We ended up with 3 nice sized yellowfin in the boat, and lost probably 4 others.  Our last bite of the evening ended up a 100-110# big eye, which we put in the boat.  We packed it in about 4:30am and headed home.   A bit further up the line to the north, the chunk bite is absolutely nuts, so seems we are in for a good few weeks of fishing.

Capt. Joe ran a day trip on Friday and found some great action with up to 50 dolphin and eight billfish sightings (white marlin and sailfish).  Great action, not all that far from the dock.  Reports of wahoo on the inshore lumps are also pretty steady as well, so not a bad time to try a shorter day trip either.
