2011-01-09 - Key West Fishing - Great Tuna Action on Light Tackle
Weâ??re experiencing the best offshore fishing of the year right now here in Key West and the Lower Keys. Bait (live pilchards) has been easy, and weâ??ve finally gotten our east current and thatâ??s brought waves of blackfin tuna, sailfish and wahoo to our deeper Atlantic wrecks and the reef edge. Had a chance to get out with Rob and Sonia Tobeck of Seattle, Washington this week. Rob had an epic day of tuna fishing on Wednesday. We caught 6 blackfin to 28 pounds in an hour, then started releasing fish. After an hour of that, we decided to start teasing fish with a hookless lure and get video. The bite was insane and will post some footage as soon as rob gets it back to me. After getting bored with the tuna, we moved along the reef looking for variety. Sonia boated a 31-pound king and we lost several others in the same weight class, then went 1-3 on sails.

The next day we had some good mixed bag fishing on the reef for cero mackerel, and capped the day off with several LARGE blacktip sharks with Rob releasing a 125-pounder.

Tarpon season is right around the corner so be sure to book your spring days!
