If youâ??ve ever wanted to catch an Atlantic sailfish, now is the time in Key West. This is some of the most exciting fishing of the year, as packs of sails are roaming the clear, shallow depths from 20-45 feet on the reef edge, showering schools of ballyhoo. The drill is to catch your bait early (either hair hooking or lift netting, as the baits survive better, and the fish seem to prefer the baits that are handled better.) then run the reef edge looking for showering schools of ballyhoo. This isnâ??t your typical big-boat, trolling scenario; weâ??re actually running and gunning, finding schools of sails actively feeding, then casting live ballyhoo into the mele on light (up to 20-pound class) spinning tackle. In addition to the sails, youâ??ll find other pelagic predators like blackfin tuna, little tunny and the occasional dolphin working the schools of bait as well.
