Islamorada Fishing Report

Simply put, a gorgeous week in Islamorada! A little cold front rolled through and helped to cool us all down. The first of the week Capt Andrew and Capt Jeff had to fill in for me and they had a great day including a nice Wahoo and several nice King Mackerels. They anchored up for a short time and caught some Snappers for dinner which turned out real nice.

Late in the week the weather got us for a day, however the next two days were perfect with light winds out of the NW and NE and the current was flowing pretty well too..,SW which is perfect for reef fishing. The Yellowtails really went to chewing for us as we had our limit in about two and a half hours with 6 guys, along with a handful of nice Spanish Mackerels; one was about 7lbs. All were caught on a quick retrieve of the Gotcha lure. There were some Mangrove Snappers which has slowed as these fish are moving to the Backcountry/Gulf side. We spent a little time looking in some deeper water 130 to 190 feet, however, we didn’t have much luck. It’s still too early, but it’s coming. We did, however, find a Sailfish on our right short rigger! It felt good since they have been a little finicky this week with the conditions that are here for them. There has been some caught all week but no great numbers.

We had a group of 11 today, the Webster family, and the kids had a blast. It’s always nice when things come together for the young ones! The Yellowtails bit pretty good as did the Mutton snappers, a few small Groupers and a bunch of Blue Runners. The water is very clean as we fished a wreck in about 60’ and could see the bottom perfectly. There was a pretty cool handful of big Blue parrot fish milling about along with a large school of Speedo’s. The Triggerfish eating at the chum was real exciting stuff for the youngsters today as they were from 5 to 13 had plenty of entertainment!!

Figured we'd get out this afternoon, before the front comes through this evening. Awesome Thanksgiving Day weather here in the Keys and the Patch Reef fishing was good. Water was just dirty enough and I figured there would be a couple muttons around...Knocked off Justin's first Mutton Snapper, Cero Mackeral, and Nurse Shark. Had some good Yellowtails and also a Big 30# Baracuda that engulfed a live blue runner hanging off the starboard rigger. Skied 5' out of the water, 8' from the boat...good as it gets.

Very cool watching a 6 year old casting gotcha lures and hooking into 5lb. jacks and cero macs.... he caught a lot more than I did, I can tell you that!

Key West Fishing Report

We pretty much got weathered out over the Thanksgiving weekend, but when the wind switched to the north, it gave us a good chance to continue targeting the blackfin tuna that are loading up on some of the deep structure south of Key West. There have been a few sails around as well, but most have been caught by those targeting tuna and not specifically fishing for them. Live pilchards are plentiful, and after this front — the strongest of the year — settles in, expect the tuna, sailfish and reef action to be red-hot. We haven't seen our first wave of wahoo yet, but as soon as conditions calm, I expect the fishing to go off the charts as well. On the boat side of things, we're in the process of breaking in our new engine on our 18-foot Action Craft, Freelancer . She's a great boat that's going to allow us to chase sharks, tarpon, bonefish, permit, trout and redfish on the thousands of square miles of pristine, clear-water flats from Big Pine all the way to the Marquesas Keys. We have some prime-time tarpon dates available from March through June, both day and night trips so avoid the rush and book soon!

Bahamas Wahoo Fishing Report - BITE IS GOING OFF!

So, we have some good news and some bad news. First the bad news. This is a second hand report, and the OVER UNDER is not yet getting in on the action. Now the good news. This should be one of the last second hand reports you will have to hear from us, as OU is likely to leave late next week for the Bahamas, where it will spend the next nine months. Now the really good news. This is a quote from a long time Bahamas fisherman and friend of ours, Jeff Scannelli, who owns and operates a top notch sportfish out of Treasure Cay. The following post appeared on www.Sportfishermen.com

"EPIC BAHAMAS WAHOO BITE: just so you all know the wahoo bite here in treasure cay is epic right now!! going out on the tide and catching 10 to 15 fish to 80 pounds. it is as good as i have seen here in over 20 years, they are eating everything from plugs to ballyhoo! skyrocketing out of the water like billfish! now is the time to get in on this as the weather is great and the fish are snapping!"

Then just a couple days later, I received a phone call from Brian MacKay, along with a couple emails and photos to back it up. Brian is another quite experienced Bahamas Fisherman, that now lives in Rum Cay. It just so happens, that Brian is fishing my own personal 32' Mirage which I bought back in 1998. Brian took it off my hands a few years ago and put it back into prime time condition and has been wearing the bottom paint off her quite a bit. It's great to see that boat doing such good things again. I think it was two summers ago, Brian emailed me with a similar Blue Marlin report, catching like 4-6 a day during July. Anyway...back to Wahoo. Brian said the bigger wahoo are definitely on the prowl.

You'll see a couple pictures of 50-80 pound wahoo that they got to the boat, and one that they almost got most of! That happens so often out there, "The Big One Got Away" yet again. Stories of almost being dumped, long battles, straightened hooks, and I'm sure you are getting the picture. How long will it be till the world record Wahoo comes from the area of Rum, Cat, & San Salvador? If it wasn't for the all too healthy local population of white tip sharks, I would venture a guess that the record would currently be in the books for the South East Bahamas. As it is, you often can only wonder, "just how big that fish might have been".

The fishing is great, the weather still quite good, so if you want to go Wahoo Fishing this winter, please don't wait. Most people think you need to wait until January and February. Honestly, the only thing that happens in January and February is that the cold fronts become more frequent and the weather more difficult. The fishing is going off right now and the weather has been drop dead gorgeous. Tough to beat!

Mirage 32 "Open" Flybridge Dayboat"

Project Update - November, 2009

It's been quite some time since we updated everyone on the new Mirage 32 we are putting into production. The first thing we need to point out is that this is NOT a traditional "Flybridge" boat. Quite the contrary. Look close at the renderings and photos below and you will see that this is much more like an express layout, minus the tower, plus a flybridge.

The whole concept behind this boat, is a dual station boat, allowing for single person operations, while still providing for exceptional visibility when conditions and crew allow. The cockpit is flush from the oversized transom livewell/fish box all the way to the forward cabin door, and there is no rear bulkhead. Instead you have great mezzanine seating, and a very large, comfortable, and protected lounging area for you crew, guests, kids, or whoever happens to be on board that day. The revolutionary VOLVO IPS propulsion system is being installed in this first version, but twin outboards, twin inboard diesel, or even single diesel are all available power options. The various power options each change the layout slightly and have their tradeoffs and benefits, of course. In conjunction with Volvo, we've estimated a top speed of 47 mph, while cruising 35, getting almost 2 mpg.
