Northeast Canyon Season - is the best yet to come?

We received the following note from Mitch Roffer this week www.roffs.com , looks like we will be fishing the canyons well into November this year!

Just a quick note that a relatively large(90 miles in diameter) clockwise rotating eddy with water temperatures of 71 degreesF is just east of the Hudson Canyon (centered near 71'00'W 39'15'N) over 1400 fathom depths. This eddy is likely to provide tuna, dolphin, wahoo and mako sharks now over the Block Canyon area and in coming weeks to the Hudson Canyon to Toms Canyon and canyons south. The western boundary is presently over Jones Valley. We are telling you this so that you do not winterize your boats prematurely.

New Jersey Fishing Report

Hey all once again the weather is killing us but we have been catching some fish when the weather allows. We have been following some water from the Lindy down to the Wilmington that has some  yellowfin  in it. While not red hot, we are managing anywhere from 3 to 8 fish in it. The water had been in the 71 degree range and is now offshore of the Wilmington. On our most recent trip we decided to head to the Wilmington but the warmer patch had slid out to 500 fathoms and the weather wouldn’t allow us to drift. We anchored in the East Bight and wound up with a few  yellowfin  in the 67.5 degree water.

On a very positive note it appears the tuna season will last well into December as some of the best water with a good bit of fish in it is on its way. There are currently two pieces we are watching. The first one we will be able to fish is now filtering in the Toms while the major eddy is still up in Block canyon. This time of year we have to go in these smaller weather  windows and  would love to put open boat trips together with a days notice. Please feel free to sign up and get on our list!

Key West Fishing Report

Even with record-high temperatures, we're experiencing some great fall fishing in Key West. This weekend, we had the chance to fish with a serious group of meat fishermen, the orders were on the table to fill the coolers, and that we did.

On Saturday, we took off on a 57-mile run one way and the party limited on African pompano, releasing a total of 15 of the rare, exotic species on live bait. They also boated three cobia to 30 pounds missing their limit by one fish, having lost several larger ones including an estimated 50-pounder.

On Sunday, we continued the hunt to fill their freezer and succeeded, limiting out on cobia to 30 pounds before 10 am. Several other stops proved unsuccessful, until finally getting into the flag yellowtail and limiting with 40 yellowtails to 4 pounds and a 15 pound mutton snapper.

This fishing should continue to get better, especially after we start getting our season cold fronts. In addition to the cobia and yellowtail action, anglers continue to find dolphin and a few wahoo off the reef and blackfin tuna are beginning to take up residence on some of the deeper Atlantic wrecks. We're also expecting to see some sails starting to push through as well.

Some of the longer runs down the reef to the west (weather permitting) should produce good catches of flag yellowtail, mutton snapper and red and black grouper.

On the flats, permit have really turned on, with guides reporting seeing dozens of fish in a day. Thanks to the warm weather, baby tarpon are still around in good numbers and respond well to live bait. Bonefish should be strong up until the first several cold fronts, then expect them to take a seat on the back burner until March.

Give us a call and come fishing. It's a great time of year and we hope to see you out on the water.

OU Open Boat NJ Trips

With the overnight bite turning on, we are going to start putting together open boat overnight tuna trips whenever we get a weather window to run.  This time of year, the more flexibility we all have, the more likely to get out and load the boat.  ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GETTING OUT, EMAIL OR CALL US!  We will make a list and contact everyone whenever we see a weather window.  Hopefully we will be able to get 6 people together and get out. We typically see the windows develop with about 48 hours notice.
