Great Fall Fishing Action Starting to Come Together
|
We had our first “Fall-like” batch of weather this past week. Can’t say that we enjoyed it, but it was a reminder that we are now into September and things are once again changing on the fishing grounds. Over the last week we were barely able to get out as a persistent North East blow kept everyone at the dock. Just prior to the blow, we had some good indications that the Fall bite was starting to happen. Inshore, the False Albacore have moved in quite nicely, along with some bigger bluefish. This has provided some fantastic action on light tackle and the run is only 10 miles, making them easily reachable on both our half and full day inshore trips. Shouldn’t be too long till the Striped Bass Fishing starts to show back up along the beach. Offshore, the Yellowfin were being caught both night and day right before the blow in some of the “Mid Canyons” that are right in our backyard.

Notice the well formed Eddy of water that is positioned between the Toms and Spencer Canyons. This Eddy is spinning clockwise, bringing warm gulf stream water from offshore. Typically the best fishing is where this “onshore flow” intersects the 100 fathom curve. Currently this is happening in the NE corner of the Lindenkohl Canyon, which we affectionately call “home” and has produced a lot of our best fishing over the years. This weekend will likely not be the best indicator for how the fishing will be going forward, as we are coming off a very bright full moon. But, over the next 10 days as we go through the best moon phase of the month, things will become more clear. With the bulk of our overnight tuna season scheduled to start in about one week as we approach the new moon in September, we will all be anxiously waiting to see what the season brings! At this point, there are still several good dates, on the right moon phases available in both September, and even more so in October. If you are looking to get out, give us a shout.

A week full of wind and rain with no fishing, BOOOO!! However, things have improved greatly over the weekend. First let’s start with our success of the night-time Bachelor party trips. These trips have been going super, lots of action for all on board. In most cases plenty of fish to take home too. These trips lately have been very good with Sea bass, triggers, mackerels, blue fish, flounder and albacore!!! We have been fishing several local wrecks and some reef edges with rocky bottom and real nice ledges. There has been plenty of bait inshore; a mixture of sand eels and bunkers. We have mostly been staying in about 16 fathoms of water. Trolling spoons and cedar plugs has done the trick
Now the offshore report has blown up, yaaaaa! Out in 50 to 60 Fathoms there seem to be plenty of White Marlins along with a mixture of nice gaffer Dolphin. Trolling Dink baits and teasers is all that is needed, very simple stuff. We managed to catch a handful on Saturday as well as some 15 to 30 Dolphins. Sunday it was Yellowfin time!! All you wanted!! |

We had a blast today, not real big fish but yet very charter friendly!!! The greenies were mixed in with them so we had to weed through the fish. The nicest part was that there were no throw back Yellowfins at all!! We managed to catch one 50lber and lost maybe two more the same size, the rest were all 20 to 30 lb fish. Trolling in 26 to 32 fathoms, water was 77 degrees and full of life. Plastics seemed to keep the Albert’s busy as did the cedar plugs on the flat lines. The meat, however, produced the Yellowfins. We like to run them in the medium and long rigger positions. There is where I find we get most of the tunas bites when the Albacores are mixed in with them. Never had a pull on our down rod today. I thought for sure it would work wonders but no luck. We are back at it in the AM…standing by!!

False Albacore Fishing Report

| We took PRETTY WORK out for a short half day trip, looking to find the False Albacore biting where Tyler had them for us on the Mirage 21 about a week ago. We put the lines in just shy of 2FB, on a couple lumps that have been holding small Bluefish. No Blues today though, so we kept on venturing offshore and wound up on the Sea Isle Ridge. We started at the South end of the Ridge and worked to the north, finally boating a couple of False Albacore. We trolled a combination of small Cedar Plugs, Spoons, and Diving Plugs. It was pretty slow, although we did hear of a couple dolphin that were caught and the boats there were picking at the Albacore. Not red hot, by any means, that's for sure. The NE wind started coming on pretty strong and we called it a day, heading back to Avalon Pointe Marina. |

| Quick Late Report. We just got in from an overnight and fished the spencer and lindenkohl canyons. Very slow fishing. We managed one of two yellowfin overnight in the lindy and couldn't get anything going on the troll. Will get more details together tomorrow in a more indepth report. |
