Hot weather, warm water, calm seas and sporadic fishing are probably the best way to describe the current state of affairs in the north east canyons. The bluefin tuna have moved on and the yellowfin bite is still spotty at best. Dolphin are the most consistent pelagic we are finding right now, followed by white marlin. We have just begun a solid overnight schedule in addition to our daytime fishing, so we will see if the yellowfin tuna begin to feed on the chunk over the next week or so. To date, they have not, but some reports of nicer fish in the mid canyons are giving us some reasonable hope that things may change quite soon. I will say that now is definitely a good time to consider a white marlin trip if you've been holding off for the right conditions. |

The White Marlin are still biting pretty good with some dolphin and, well, no tunas. We had a pretty good week, however, the end was pretty slow for us. The night trips have been going very well, as were our two inshore trips we ran this week. This, by the way, should start to really pick up. We fished the reef/wrecks one day and did real well with some keeper Sea Bass and a few keeper Flounder along with plenty of throw backs so lots of action. We also spent another trip trolling for Blue fish and small Spanish Mackerels. This trip also proved to be a winner as we almost had our limit of small 1 1/2lb snapper blues and a few Spanish. We trolled two planners with little Clark spoons and wore them out in about 67 feet of water. We did have one good day with the Whites and then things kind of fell off for us for Friday and Saturday with only a couple of Dolphin. We tried really hard to find the tunas but no such luck. Our offshore time was spent mostly in 55 fathoms, on or about the 850 to the 900 line. We were fishing balls of bait. We’ve got another busy week so hopefully things will pick up with the tunas!

Marlin Everywhere!!!

Well, while the yellowfin fishing remains slow we are seeing one of the best marlin bites develop. This week we had numerous trips to the edge since bluefin fishing has drastically tapered off. We have seen numerous marlin on every trip to the edge this week. Gin clear Bahamas blue water, fishing from the Carteret canyon all the way to the Wilmington with the best bite being in the 78.5 degree water. This water is some of the best water I have seen in recent memory, however, we are sad to say there is a lack of tuna in the area.
On our overnights this week we have seen a plethora of squid all over the Spencer and Lindy where we have been overnighting this week. The overnight bite remains slow with just one sword bite and a blue shark to show for our efforts. On a positive note we have seen unlimited amounts of squid which should prove for a good yellowfin bite shortly. We have continued to pick at dolphin throughout the day but nothing red hot by any means. On our most recent trip we encountered a lot of debris inshore of the Lobster Claw on our way home boating a bunch of dolphin. So be careful on your way out!!
This week we are looking forward to the marlin bite continuing and hopefully, the yellows will start to show up. With the amount of bait around it should be very shortly. Anybody that wants to marlin fish now is the time as we have people diving in the water daily!!!! |

On Tuesday we did a little experimenting on our half day inshore trip. We'd been investigating a local wreck about 3 miles off the beach and it had seemed to be holding fish. We managed to get an anchor down on the wreck and it was well worth the effort. We stayed about an hour and caught about 10 Tautog. We kept 3 with the biggest being about 3.5 pounds, with all being taken on cut up fresh crab. The Tautog fishing should only improve over the course of the next several months and with a bit more time, we have a large number of wrecks that are likely holding fish within easy striking distance. We are ready to run fully dedicated Tautog Fishing Charters if anyone would like to specifically target these tasty fish. The run is short, only 3-6 miles, and the action is good. The toughest thing about Tautog Fishing, also known as Blackfish, is anchoring on top of the wreck. You have to be right on top of it. This can prove tricky and take some time or a couple of tries, but once you are on it, the fishing is usually pretty consistent.
