2008-08-17 - Low Profile Takes Second in OC Tournament

Overnight Tuna Trips, Second Place - Ocean City Overnight Billfish Tournament!

Both LOW PROFILE and JUSTIFIED got out on overnight tuna trips this week. LOW PROFILE was entered in the Ocean City, NJ Overnight Billfish Tournament. This is a great event with prizes for just about everything you can catch. Bad weather in the middle of the week caused us to run both Overnight trips on Friday into Saturday, and both were quite successful. With reports of the overnight Yellowfin Bite being pretty slow, JUSTIFIED opted to anchor down on some inshore structure and wait out the Big Bluefin that we've been catching. The strategy paid off nicely, as they got a triple header just before dark, boating a 68 inch fish. Then early in the morning, the fish came through again, providing superb action right up until about 8:00am. As you'll see from the photos below, we had some young anglers on this trip, that did a super job battling these big Bluefin. Audio Report

LOW PROFILE, stopped on their way out and grabbed a 103 pound Bluefin, that was good for 3rd place in the Tuna Division, then headed off to the deep in search of some good trolling action. They settled into the East side of the Wilmington Canyon and had what turned out to be a spectacular trip. We managed to get a bit of an overnight bite going, catching 6 of 10 Yellowfin Tuna bites, and on the troll, the action was also quite good, with a bunch of nice dolphin boated, along with two Wahoo, a Longfin Tuna, and a nice Blue Marlin release as a bonus to the whole trip. The two largest Dolphin went 39 and 36 pounds, and took second and third place in the Dolphin catagory. In the end, LOW PROFILE ended up 2nd in the overall, and combined with the Tuna and Dolphin catagories, won about $7300. Nice job to all crew and anglers, and we look forward to competing in this event next year. Audio Report

In Ocean City, MD, bothPRETTY WORK and THATS RIGHT have been mainly fishing just inside the Poorman's Canyon in 40 to 50 fathoms. They've been catching 3 to 5 Yellowfin on average per day, along with some dolphin and a good number of White Marlin. In the beginning of the week we found a bucket holding hundreds of dolphin anywhere from 5 to 11 pounds. We used light penn spinning tackle and had a blast. As a matter of fact, 12 other boats caught their limit of Dolphin on this bucket. Pretty amazing stuff. Later that day we wound up with 4 nice Yellowfin and a White Marlin release. As the week went on, we found ourselves wondering here and there, finding more dolphin and a few tuna. All the bites have been on spreader bars and ballyhoo. The tunas have been anywhere from 30 to 60lbs. We did fish the Baltimore one day and caught several Yellowfin along with a couple gaffer Dolphin. Our bites came on the west wall in 54 fathoms and inshore in 40 fathoms. We found the dolphin that day in 32 fathoms. Again it seemed the shallower we got, the more life we found.
