TUNA FISHING TURNS ON - Avalon, NJ & Ocean City Maryland Fishing: The tuna fishing heated up this week as a warm water eddie pushed into the 100 fathom curve. Guess where? Yea, That's Right, the Lindenkohl and Spencer Canyons. Once again, some of the best fishing in the mid-atlantic canyons is right in our back yard. The fish were primarily being caught on the cold side of the break and there were Yellowfin, Bluefin, Big Eyes, Dolphin and a few billfish all mixed in together. Boats were catching on everything from ballyhoos to plastic, to spreader bars. The best of the fishing took place on Wednesday and Thursday and had slowed a bit by the weekend. One friend reported the best trip of his life earlier this week. Yesterday THATS RIGHT fished between 100 and 500 fathoms on a temperature break going from 68 to 74 degrees. We boated 5 yellowfin, 5 nice dolphin, and a mako which we released. Back inshore nice sized Bluefin are now being caught, with reports of 100 to 150 pound fish being boated only 35 miles offshore. It's definitely time to start thinking about that early season Tuna Trip. We've got guys looking to put an open boat trip together this week, and taking a run to the Spencer. SHARK FISHING UPDATE: The mako fishing has been pretty good we have had four releases this week and we also killed one that hit the scales at 120lbs. Another shark highlight was our mako release while on the troll for tuna!. The catches of blue sharks have been thick.... thick enough to fight them with Penn Spinning Reels to add a little more sport to it. Our best fishing took place on the Marine Electric wreck and we also fished the Tea cup and the surrounding lumps from 25-31 fathoms in water temps from 61 to 66 degrees. All of our bites were on mackerel or a squid/mackerel rig.

North Carolina Fishing Report

Fishing in N. C. continues to pretty good with good catches of dolphin,tuna and billfish. Inshore fishing is still producing great catches of medium sized bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. The Tuna fishing did slow down this week, but the fish are still around. We are seeing the fish up top at times and marking them consistently, but they seem to have a case of lockjaw. Some boats managed to get a plug to schools on top, but it was very difficult to keep up with them. As the moon begins to fade this coming week, the troll bite should turn back on. The big story here on the outer banks continues to be the Blue Marlin bite. The older fellows claim that it is the best blue marlin fishing to ever hit the coast of North Carolina. PRETTY WORK released another nice 200 pound class fish this week.

GIANT BLUEFIN! If you were lucky enough to be fishing Saturday out of Oregon Inlet you could very well have been treated to a nice surprise in the form of Giant Bluefin. Yes I said Giant Bluefin Tuna. Several boats were lucky enough to get the bites. These tackle busters showed up in or around 100 fathoms. One of these tuna brought to the dock went 400 pounds. Some boats reported giants making a shamble of their gear, while others reported fighting fish into the late afternoon and early hours of the night. What a nice surprise. you never know exactly what you are going to hook into fishing the Outer Banks of North Carolina!

Blue Marlin Bite Slows a Bit: As we approach the full moon, the fishing has predictably slowed, although we are still getting shots at Blue Marlin just about every day. On our last 4 day outing, we ended up going 2-7, pulling off a couple of these fish near the boat. The Bites we have been getting have been good bites. Most of the Marlin have been right up on the edge chasing small tuna and dolphin around. The fish have been hot, putting on some spectacular displays. So, for the wrong side of the moon, we are still pleased with the results. The best Blue Marlin fishing of the year typically will begin 3 days after the Full Moon in June, which happens late next week. We expect to be seeing 4-6 fish a day, and the Tuna should turn back on as well. Again as we moved into this full moon phase, the tuna bite shut down, but should pick back up on the back-side of this next June Moon. We moved LOW PROFILE to Paradise Island for a few days this past week for a large outing and even managed to raise a Blue Marlin off of Atlantis! LOW PROFILE is currently shoving off on a 4 day live-aboard trip to Eleuthera, Cat Island, Conception Island, and will eventually end up back at San Salvador, where we will finish up this 2008 season. We should have a chance at some good bottom fishing over the next couple days and typically the Full Moons in May and June provide for some excellent shots at large Mutton Snapper.
