We ran 11 offshore Tuna Charters this week out of Ocean City and New Jersey. Unfortunately, a front put a damper on the fishing this weekend as we were forced to cancel 8 Tuna Charters on both Saturday and Sunday. Earlier in the week, we had mixed results, with our boats targeting both Bluefin Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna. Two of the boats opted to do some chunking for Bluefin early in the morning this week and found the fish willing to cooperate if you got there early enough. The chunk bite was on from about 4:30am to 6:30am then it died. Fish from 50 to 80 pounds were the norm this week and some nice yellowfin going up to 60 pounds were to be found in and around 40 fathoms inside the Baltimore Canyon. THATS RIGHT had a real nice day on Wednesday, putting 9 Yellowfin in the boat to 55#. That same morning LOW PROFILE running its first trip out of the Cape May area in South New Jersey, got into a nice Bluefin chunking bite catching 3 keeper fish and battling a bunch more, all before 6:30am. To get in on the early morning bite, we have been leaving as early as 1-2am on some occasions.
On the troll, the Bluefin bite seemed to be better in the afternoon towards the end of the week as both PRETTY WORK and JUSTIFIED started catching fish around 2:00pm on Friday's Trip. JUSTIFIED put together a great day going 10-12 with the largest Bluefin weighing in at 118 pounds. The largest Tuna boated this week by our charter boats was a 144 pound Bluefin Tuna, boated by THATS RIGHT on Thursday's Ocean City Fishing Charter. That fish was caught on the Hambone, as were many of our fish this week. Other good spots for us this week included Massey's Canyon, the Chicken Bone and the Sausages. The Yellowfin Tuna seem to be just outside the Bluefin, with the best of the bite being in about 40 fathoms.
