Over Under - Viewing Report 2007-01-14 - Islamorada Fishing Report - January 14, 2007 The weather in the Florida Keys has been unseasonably warm, and the water temperatures have stayed on the warm side too. This probably accounts for the slow sailfish bite that's been going on for the last week. We are seeing a few each day, but they are reluctant to eat, and we have been moving onto bottom fishing on most days, where the action is typically quite good. Most of the sails we are seeing are in tight to the reef, showering bait in 40-70' of water. Best bet has been to cruise the reef looking for bait showers and pitching baits at the sails. The bait has been plentiful with ballyhoo, cigar minnows, and speedos all readily available. On the bottom, the yellowtails are biting real good on most days and a grouper or two along with some mutton snapper usually can be found throughout the day. The mackeral bite continues to be real good, with limit catches the norm. We are looking for cooler temperatures and the next cold front to get the sailfish biting again, which should be any day now. We are now running the Low Profile, our new 55' Custom Carolina Rig, along with the Pretty Work here in Islamorada. The Low Profile leaves for the Bahamas in early February for the season.
