Over Under - Viewing Report 2006-03-15 - Cat Island & Conception Island Fishing Adventure The crew of the Over Under ran a trip out of Hawks Nest on Cat Island last weekend, with a group of guys from Avalon, NJ. We started off flying into Hawks Nest Resort on our Aztec and after a quick stop for some Kalik's we headed into town for a great meal at the Blue Bird, a local favorite. Next morning we were off, fishing Columbus Point in some sloppy conditions. The dolphin and tuna were biting and we picked away at mostly 20-28# dolphin and Yellowfin going up up to about 28#. After about 3 hours of slugging it out in 6-10' sloppy conditions, we decided to make a move and ran over to Conception Island, where we began deep dropping. We settled into a comfortable spot on the leeward side of the island and picked away at beautiful Red and Black Snapper. About 4:00 we moved into the anchorage and dropped the hook in 10' of water, where we were able to snorkle and sleep in comfort for the rest of the evening. Just before sunset, Bill put out a bait, thinking maybe a shark would swim by as we cleaned our catch, but instead, it was a 20# Grouper that came calling and was quickly put in the boat. The next morning we were back on the troll on the East side of Conception, but the bite was slow, as the tide had slacked. We decided to head back to Columbus Point and fish the afternoon back at Cat Island. The move paid off, as we again picked away at nice Dolphin, Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna, as well as a small Wahoo. We decided to duck into an anchorage just inside of Columbus Point, called Winding Bay, so we could get in on the morning bite, before heading back to the dock. That evening we had some fun with 12-20# jacks on light tackle that were swarming around the boat. The following morning the bite was on. We were fishing one rig for tuna, one for dolphin, and a few for Wahoo, and they all saw action this last morning. We had 2 nice Wahoo bites, but the sharks beat us to them this day and we only got back the head of an estimated 60# hoo. The dolphin and tuna all came to the boat though and we had a pretty nice morning bite. About noon we pulled in the lines and ran back to the dock, cleaned up and flew back to Ft. Lauderdale, so everyone could catch their connecting flights home. In total we caught about 60 Fish, 11 dolphin, 10 Red Snapper, 3 Black Snapper, 1 Baracuda, 1 Grouper, 1 1/3 Wahoo, 10 Horse Eyed Jacks, and about 23 assorted tunas.
