Captain's Focus

2004-05-03 - 3 days of Charter Fishing at Cat Island
The crew of the Over Under hosted George Poveromo and Ray McConnell for 3 days of Fishing at Cat Island this past weekend. George Poveromo is senior editor of Saltwater Sportsman and Ray McConnell owns Ray's Offshore tackle shop in Boca Raton, FL. George, Ray, and the Over Under crew were filming footage for an episode of George Poveromo's series appearing on ESPN Outdoors. The word for the weekend was DOLPHIN..all you wanted and then some. Eventually, we were forced to move away from the birds and work areas well off the edge in search of billfish or tuna. The yellowfin bite was slow, and only one fish was boated, weighing about 25#. Atleast 2 dozen dolphin were boated or tagged and released over the 3 days. The main focus of the weekend was billfish, however. On day 1, the group was still more focussed on finding tuna and didn't raise a bill. Day's 2 and 3 each produced 4-5 fish in the spread. One small blue, weighing about 150# was released on day 2, and shortly thereafter a much larger fish was hooked up, only to have the hook pull. Day 3 produced 4 blue marlin in the spread, but none lasted on the hook long enough to get the release. Al in all, about 9-10 billfish were raised in 2 days, which is pretty impressive for this time of year. Two other boats fishing the area, each had similar results boating one fish, while raising between 3 and 6 apiece. The majority of the fish were smaller blues ranging from 100-175#, while a couple of larger 300# fish were seen as well. A few white marlin were also raised, but none were released by any of the boats fishing last weekend.
