"We have an extremely rare Saturday-Sunday open boat trip this holiday weekend - July 1-2 on the 48 Viking - $899/person Call - 732-272-4445 or Email - adam@canyonrunner.com Second - what the 48' Canyon Runner with Capt. Deane Lambros at the helm and Capt. Ryan Britt did in the pit needs to be highlighted. On Sunday they left the dock with the Gerard Eichman charter and found all these bluefin we've been catching on their way offshore - they boated 10 quickly in less than an hour of non-stop action. They then headed for the Hudson. In the Hudson it was yellowfins - lots of them - 18 of them with a few very nice ones. Night time saw a big mako jump off. The Monday morning troll saw our nicest big-eye of the year at 130# put in the boat. So back inshore they went for a shot at some bigger bluefin we knew were around - 15 minutes of trolling and down came the way back and in came a 60" 130# bluefin. A few hours at the dock and they left in the middle of the night Monday/Tuesday morning to get on the bluefin grounds at sun up and man what a decision. By 10am Tuesday morning the Ken Liss/Mitch Titen charter had 8 bluefins from 58" to 63" then they got the big bite. A long battle later and they taped off an 83" bluefin that probably went 450#. It had to be released as the 48 Viking already has it's trophy bluefin for the season but they nailed! So in just 48 hours this all went down. Not bad! By the way - on Tuesday we saw several of our Canyon Runner Fishing Report Members cash in on these major bluefins from 60"-75". Really never seen so many big fish caught this time of year with this consistency in a long time!"
At Brielle, Jamaica reported a good 31-hour tilefish that included several limits and was topped by a 30-pounder for Jeff Simpson of Livingston. The next tilefish special sails at 10 p.m. July 9. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. Early reports this morning were of good jigging for better-sized blues.
The Jamaica II had a good all-day fluke trip on Monday that produced seven limits, including one for Ralph Molinaro from North Haledon, who had the pool winner at 5 3/4 pounds. Dave Tootchen of Philadelphia leads the monthly pool at 6 3/4 pounds.
Allen Riley and John Mazzeo of South Plainfield drove down to the Sandy Hook surf along with Duke Matero of Piscataway, Lou Vargas from Fanwood, and John Bernal of Bangor, Pa. Based on his results so far in the northern Shore surf, Riley wasn't expecting much on a beautiful morning -- and that's what they got after casting lures, fresh bunker and Gulp for hours. Mazzeo was high hook with two sea robins, while Maturo hooked a sundial on Gulp, and Vargas caught a skate. Riley managed a 14-inch fluke on Gulp, and noted that this has been the worst spring surfcasting he's ever seen in that area.
