Captain's Focus

Island Beach State was closed today due to the budget battle in Trenton, though it could be quickly reopened if an agreement on a budget is reached. Anglers aren't missing much as John Bushell of Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park had called the fishing horrible -- probably due to the cold waters resulting from a week of south winds. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar experienced poor fluke fishing today due to the cold waters, though a 7-pound fluke was boated. The Golden Eagle from that port had tough bluefish jigging in the south wind, but better weather is ahead -- including a switch to lighter southwest on Monday. Scott Leadbeter of Haddon Heights took his Aquasport out of Atlantic Highlands on Friday afternoon, and with the south wind getting stronger he drifted the Sandy  Hook Bay shore for fluke -- though there were only shorts up to two of 17 1/2 inches. Then some birds started picking, and he cast a small popper on a light 12-pound baitcasting rig before being surprised by a slammer blue rather than the little ones he was expecting. A few more of at least 5 pounds were added.
