Captain's Focus

Chuck Many of Annandale has been busy coaching softball this spring, but got back into chasing stripers today with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands. We had no trouble loading up with peanut bunkers  though sandworms proved more effective with school bass today. Many waited for a storm in N.Y. C. to get out of the way before we moved up to the Hudson for fine schoolie action despite a strong south wind against the current in 77 degree waters as we released 24 stripers plus 15 bluefish and a 13-inch blackfish. Only one of the bass made 28 inches, while the blues ran from 3 to 6 pounds and nailed the peanuts as soon as they were dropped down. Though we never had a drop of rain, we payed the price with a rough ride back. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had non-stop variety action today with sea bass, chub mackerel, ling, fluke and some blues. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant was into mackerel and blues on Thursday when sharks invaded the slick and provided anglers with fights they hadn't expected. Wind for a good fluke drift wasn't a problem today, but it was on Thursday when Capt. Stan Zagleski reported as follows from his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands:  August 3, 2017   "A very nice day on the water but could have used some wind or current this morning.  The guys and gals managed to pick a few fish this morning when we had pretty much no movement at all with a lack of current and wind.  By late morning we finally got a decent breeze  and drift and like the flip of a switch we started to bang away at a mix of quality keepers and shorts until it was time to go home.   The folks using the Spro rigs had the best of the action this morning and the baiters got into the game with the drift later in the day.    Jason Roth, Whitehall, Pa., took the pool with a nice 7 pound 7 ounce fish.  Back at it again tomorrow.  BE DOWN EARLY."
