Captain's Focus

After all the warm weather we've been enjoying, this morning was a dose of reality. My hands were cold for the first time since last winter as I cast a popper to no avail at Sea Girt -- and made a run to coffee rather than another spot.Yet, n hour or so later I was casting or blackfish in Point Pleasant Canal in mild conditions. The tog seemed to be a little turned off, but Tom from Cranford manged to release two 15-inch blacks. Anglers who had been to the surf at Bay Head reported seeing lots of bird action and some breaking fish well out of asting ange -- where whales were also feeding. I was surprised to see a still rough, but fishable surf after yesterday's northwest wind. There's a good forecast for the next few days, and the surf should flatten out. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported small bass are being plugged in the surf at night on SP Minnows. The water temperature is down to 66 degrees. Betty & Nick's reported that little tunny have been showing in Barnegat Inlet. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got out and read plenty of jumbo blues, but it was too rough to drift until later in the day. Thry caught some 10-to-18-pound blues on Run-Off Hammer jigs, but not enough. That fishing should improve greatly with calmer weather forecast. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands had more fine porgy fishing, but a strong current required 10-ounce sinkers. Jim Louro of Spring Lake plugged a 27-inch striper at his local beach on Monday.
