Captain's Focus

Actually, the snow and northeast wind forecast put the biggest crimp in fishing because Saturday started out very fishable with no snow or rain and only a very light west wind. I hesitated going to Sea Girt due to the wind prediction, but that wasn't a problem at all. The conditions were pretty good despite a low tide, but the fishing was poor. The small stripers that had been abundant must have read the weather forecast because they were very scarce. It could have been that they switched to a night bite because flyrod pro Bill Massey of Wall said he caught five small bass in a row when he started in the dark, but got only one after that. I left him there when he was three bass shy of making 300 releases for the year. I only caught two stripers on the Castaways Super Teaser soon after arriving, but may have been high hook among the spin fishermen from what I heard.Hopefully, the shift back to west winds will turn the bass on again. There was better surf news further south as Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant and Maren Toleno from Mantoloking ot into lots of the small bass and a 26-incher during a long day at Island Beach State Park on the Tsunami Sand Eel. At Belmar, the Big Mohawk picked away at blackfish with some limirs, but will take off Sunday. The Ocean Explorer expects calmer seas on Sunday with those winds, and plans to sail for blackfish. Capt. Dave De Gennaro is anxious to get back into the stripers out of Barnegat Inlet Inlet with his Hi Flier out of Barnegat. After trolling a limit of medium bass Friday morning, he got into feeding bass for the first time this fall and was able cast and jig for 15-pounders. He'll be running open for them with the calming west winds. Reservations can be made by calling 732 330-5674.
