Captain's Focus

There probably won't be many catches reported, but anglers will be able to keep legal-size winter flounder and striped bass in all N.J. waters as of Thursday. Opening Day spots likely to attract attention include the Raritan Bay shorelines for stripers on clams, and the Belmar docks for flounder on seaworms , mussels or clams.  The Atlantic City Boat Show opened today at the Convention Center. As detailed in Tuesday's blog, the World Outdoor Expo opens at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rockland Community College at Suffern, New York.   Both shows run through Sunday.  The Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club boated a huge swordfish yesterday off Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall got word of that 649 1/2-pounder from owner Frank Criscola. Look for details in Friday's column. Pete Connell of Avon was also fishing out of Islamorada yesterday as he and Don Smith chartered Capt. Chris Walton of Long Key who deep-dropped 20 miles offshore on his Regulator 28 for a good catch of queen snappers from the depths along with blackfin tuna and skipjacks trolled as they moved between drops.
