Captain's Focus

Anglers planning to take in the Trout Meeting that was set for Saturday morning at Pequest Hatchery should make other plans as it has been cancelled due to the winter storm.  I probably jinxed the Outdoor Expo at Rockland Community College in Suffern, N.Y. by mentioning the good luck they've had with the weather after the first show was snowed under. While we were getting heavy rain at the Shore, I heard they had some snow up there. That shouldn't be a problem for the last two days. The show runs from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Visit www.sportshows.com/Suffern for details. With the northeaster howling, fishing is out tomorrow, and windy weather is predicted throughout the weekend. Muddy waters will be a problem even when the winds drop off. Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall had reported seeing 18 anglers fishing for winter flounder from the Belmar docks yesterday morning without success. He went back later and nothing had changed. De Stefano also heard from Frank Criscola that the enormous swordfish boated on his Crisdel fishing out of Islamorada was only estimated at 649 1/2 pounds by formula. When they were finally able to weigh it the weight was still just under 600 pounds.  That included a 35-pound squid found in its stomach.
