Captain's Focus

The only really positive report today came from Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park. They said the Berkeley Surf Club was holding its catch-and-release contest that was producing lots of shorts in the Island Beach State Park wash. The bass were so close that they warned anglers to fish lures right to the beach. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills managed a couple of stripers around 19 inches on a bucktail jig and Gotcha tail in the Bay Head surf that was rougher than yesterday. He noted that the bite was before full light, and that the break on the beach was dangerous. The party boat striper fleet is thinning out from lack of participation.  The Sea Hunter from Highlands has dropped out, as has the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands after good action Friday with very few customers. Mark Roy tried to get out Friday with his Release Me from Raritan Marina, but the northeast wind even had Raritan Bay rolling and he finished out his season by trolling for awhile.
