Captain's Focus

There weren't many keepers reported today, but the east wind did revive the fishery for shorts. The best action appeared to be to the north. Capt. Dave Riback was up near Ambrose Channel with his Queen Mary from Point Pleasant, and catching steadily when he called this morning. One keeper had been boated. Capt. Rob Semkewcyz was also into that action with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. He said one angler counted 32 releases and another had 28. There were no keepers, but some were close. Mark Roy ran his Release Me from Raritan Marina off Sandy Hook and had constant action trolling umbrella rigs as 58 shorts were released. There was also better news on small bass for surfcasters. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills said he caught three at Sea Girt, and had similar reports from other areas. The bass are the typical small fish caught at the end of the season, but at least there's something in the surf! Both Grumpy's and Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reported decent numbers of shorts being caught along with rumors of keepers though Grumpy's hasn't had a weigh-in in several days.
