Captain's Focus

The terrible weather predicted for this morning turned out to be very fishable. I fished the Bay Head surf in my usual jacket in a pleasant and mild NE breeze with hardly a sprinkle and a very fishable surf that was perfect for casting metal. The only problem was a lack of stripers. Unfortunately, the forecast for Tuesday is for strong west winds and cold. Let's hope they're wrong again. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, weighed several surf stripers from Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Gerald CeCe of Point Pleasant plugged two of 12 1/2 and 19 1/2 pounds in Bay Head. Bob Longo from Brick also plugged two of 12.2 and 14 3/4 pounds at Mantoloking. Sal Colter from Howell fished Bay Head for a 13 1/4-pund bass on a teaser where Pat Paglese of Howell clammed an 11 3/4-pounder. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den that only the Ocean Explorer got out from Belmar Marina today. Parker Pete Charters had blackfish up to 8 9/16 pounds on Sunday. Winter flounder fishing is very good from the bulkheads on sunny days when the waters warm. Matthews and a friend released eight school stripers in the local surf Sunday night under "mean " conditions that only one other angler braved. The Jamaica II from Brielle had a great trip during Saturday's 14-hour, 2 a.m. sailing as jumbo porgies dominated on one wreck and big sea bass on another -- while cod up to 20 pounds were also boated. Wes Shourt of Howell had 48 porgies, 12 sea bass up to 7 pounds, two cod and a pollock.
