Captain's Focus

It was a calm day that drew lots of boaters, but the jumbo stripers that have been hitting jigs the last few days didn't cooperate. The Golden Eagle from Belmar jigged some blues, and read stripers -- but only hooked a couple. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant also marked some bass, but settled for jigging big blues. The bunker schools were still there, and that fishery could turn around tomorrow before the stormy weather predicted for Saturday.  The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant reported the biggest bass of the fall so far when one that weighed 52.4 pounds on the boat scale was jigged Tuesday. Joe Melillo at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, continues to get a few weigh-ins of surf stripers. Bob Longo of Brick had a 16 3/4-pounder; Andy Katz from Howell took a 13 1/4-pounder. and Bill Lebowitz from Toms River used metal for an 11 1/2-pound striper. Bob Matthews of Belmar weighed a 17-pound bass. I cast metal at Bay Head this morning with no success in a beautiful surf -- and didn't see any sign of bait or fish either. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had a rumor of schools of peanut bunkers to the north.
