Captain's Focus

Though the initial reports received were that the south wind had scattered the bunker schools, some boaters ended up with good striper jigging along the Shore. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a successful Striper Marathon with bass up to about 40 pounds, and the Golden Eagle from Belmar picked bass from 15 to 35 pounds on Crocs and hammered jigs. Capt. Ryan Bogan of Jamaica II from Brielle reported good sea bass and porgy fishing. Wayne Nelson of Trenton was among those with sea bass limits. Porgy catches ran up to 15 or 20. Ed Steadman of Paterson had a 12-pound cod on Monday. Capt. Rob Semkewyc reported good striper fishing on his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands while using bunkers, eels and jigs this week. John Sands of Smithville, Pa. had a 28.6-pound pool winner today, while Monday's top bass was a 23.8-pounder by Andrew Martin of Sterling.  I joined Gene Graman and Freddie Fessel of Middletown on That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands for eeling in the channels this afternoon, but we did nothing except for spiny dogfish in Ambrose. They boated a 25-pound striper there on Monday. Bob Matthews of Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina weighed in 18 bass from 20 to 38 pounds on Monday. All were from boats. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, reported school stripers hit the Bay Head surf at mid-day Monday, but nothing happened there this morning. Allen Riley and John Mazzeo of South Plainfield fished the Sea Bright surf without a hit this morning. No bunker schools were spotted offshore.
