Captain's Focus

The best reports are still coming from the Shore bluefish fleet. The Golden Eagle  from Belmar had hot jigging action with choppers to 17 pounds early, and later also hooked them on bait. The first report of a big blue in the surf since May came from Allen Riley of South Plainfield as he hooked one estimated at 30 inches in the Sea Bright surf on a Mann-O-Lure -- but lost it. That was the only hit on that beach this morning in a large SE swell. The surf was pretty ugly today, but Joe Melillo of Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant said there are small stripers in Manasquan River and blackfish in the canal. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, had heard of the big stripers caught Friday by Bob Lake on a bunker school off Manasquan Inlet, but noted that bass were both small and few in the surf. Shark River is producing some flounder, kingfish, blowfish and blackfish. Capt. Stan Zagleski found lots of keeper blackfish today on his Elaine B II from Highlands as all had the one-tog limit. Bart Major of Howell took the pool with a 6-pounder. That boat won't be sailing again until Saturday due to the rough forecast until then.   Gene Graman of Middletown trolled Raritan Bay with plugs this morning from his That's It out of Twin Lights Marina in Highlands with Fred Fessel of Middletown and managed one legal striper.
