Captain's Focus

I doubt if any boats fished today, and anglers should check about tomorrow before coming down as NE gusts to 25 mph are still in the forecast. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant has cancelled for Thursday. The only positive reports today came from Seaside Park. Betty & Nick's Tackle reported one angler caught 50 blues in two hours on metal and a teaser at the end of the paved road in Island Beach State Park. Grumpy's Tackle reported medium-sized blues were hitting in the surf this morning on mullet baits.  I took a look at the Bay Head surf early, but with the low tide and the northeast blowing down the beach it didn't look like I'd even be able to cast metal into fishable waters. Leif Pettersen proved it could be done with a fly rod at Deal as he released a 26-inch bass and lost another with his custom popper-head white snake fly. Gene Graman of Middletown has been scoring with stripers by trolling plugs at night in Raritan Bay from his That's It out of Highlands. Last night he tried to do that with Jim Curley on the latter's boat, but it was so rough that they couldn't troll properly and never had a hit.
