Captain's Focus

As if surfcasters didn't have enough problems with seaweed in a rough surf plus snappers clipping off Gulp intended for fluke, now there's a big and building swell from the far offshore hurricane to deal with.  Capt. Dave Riback reported small blues and chub mackerel plus bonito cooperated for anglers on his Queen Mary from Point Pleasant. That boat is chartered on Tuesday. There was no report from the Golden Eagle out of Belmar when this was written, but they did catch 8-to-15-pound blues Sunday 20 miles from port. Jigs were most effective, and a few 8-to-12-pound little tunny were added. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, said there's still weed in the lrough surf, but blackfishing on crabs has been good in the northern end of Point Pleasant Canal -- and triggerfish were also reported there on Sunday. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, says rough seas resulted in many anglers staying in Shark River, where fluking was good up to a 6 7/8-pounder on a live snapper. Steven Kollar, of Washington Crossing, Pa, fished the ocean for a 9 13/16-pound fluke.  Matthews says some stripers are showing in the surf for clammers, but Bill Massey of Wall has also caught them fly fishing. Gene Graman of Middletown fished down the beach with his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands today, but didn't do anything chunking except for pound-size blues. A move back to the bay produced a couple of legal stripers from among more shorts.
