Captain's Focus

JCAA president and veteran fluke angler Paul Haertel was delighted when he finally broke through the 10-pound barrier Friday while drifting a live snapper in Barnegat Inlet. That doormat weighed 10 1/4 pounds on his scale, and was officially weighed at 10.19 pounds at Creekside Outfitters to edge a 9.8-pound fluke that Dave Lilly of Hazlet had weighed at Bahrs in Highlands on Thursday to take first in the Forked River Tuna Club Tournament which ended yesterday. Raritan Bay pro Frank Fishler had taken the lead last Sunday when he weighed an 9.4-pounder at Bahrs, but ended up in third place. A pair of 8.6-pound fluke followed, with fourth being awarded to Jim Starek as the earliest weighed --ahead of Charlie Parker from Oceanport. Chris LaGrossa was sixth with a 6.25-pounder weighed at Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park -- just ahead of Walter Wojcik at Bahrs with a 6.20, and Phil LaGrossa at 6.19 (Betty & Nick's). Nick Sabatino was ninth with a 6.05-pounder at Fisherman's Headquarters in Ship Bottom, followed by John Laspley with a 5.62 at Lacy Marine. Pete Santero weighed a 16.79-pound bluefish at Lacy Marine to win that category over Phil LaGrossa at 15.50 pounds, and Chris Lagrossa with an 11.50-pounder. The Jamaica from Brielle reported that fishing for big blues was very good both Saturday night and today. I tried casting in Point Pleasant Canal this morning without a sign of anything being there as I knew what to expect from the surf. Though there was none of the predicted northeast winds gusting to 20 mph (there was hardly enough wind to move the flags), the surf at Bay Head was very rough -- and I could see the lines of dried seaweed on the beach that saved me the trouble of trying to cast over the breakers.
