Captain's Focus

Those seeking plenty of action have been getting it almost every day lately with the pee-wee blues that are abundant off the Shore. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported a continuation of limit bluefish catches today on hammered jigs. Some bonito were mixed in. The surf at Bay Head was a pleasure to fish this morning even though there was nothing significant caught. The sea weed that had been making fishing almost impossible was gone. I snagged a fluke of about 10 inches in the tail with a metal lure, and didn't do any better when I switched to Gulp as my only hit during a brief try came from a small fluke that got off in the wash. There should be plenty of weigh-ins during the second day of the Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club's White Marlin Invitational as only 10 boats fished the first day while over four times as many headed offshore today. Pez Machine and Hard Four boated bigeyes of 228.5 and 157.4 pounds to take the lead yesterday. The first boat to weigh in today after the scales opened at 4:30 was Martuni with yellowfin tuna of 61.5, 59.1, and 56.3 pounds. I'll have additional weigh-ins after the scales close tonight.
