Captain's Focus

Anna Alexis looked good after the first day of the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association's Mako Mania with a 300.2-pounder, but Pete Casagrande came up with yet another winner on American Mustang today as his 319.9-pound mako won the big money. Anna Alexis was pushed to second, and Two Star was third at 257.2 pounds. Chum Boys finished fourth with a 245.3-pounder, while Bizzy Hook'In took fifth at 209.2 pounds. Indy II came in at the end of the day with a 207.8-pound mako that knocked Tradition's 201.7-pounder off the board at Crystal Point Marina in Point Pleasant.  There were 305 boats fishing, and they weighed 35 makos that made the 66-inch minimum length -- while three others were short of that length. I'll have details during the week. Charlie Parker of Oceanport won the Forked River Tuna Club's Fluke Contest for the third straight year when he boated an 8.9-pound fluke far to the east while fishing on his Regulator from Bahrs in Highlands with Dave Lilly of Hazlet -- who won fourth at 5.60 pounds. Lilly was on vacation, and fished seven straight days looking for a big fluke.  Capt. Stan Zagleski said a two knot current prevented him from fishing in the deep this morning, but there was good action from his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands on the change of tide. Joe Stefanelli of Maplewood had three keepers up to the pool-winning 6 5/16 pounds. Capt. Dave Riback reported slow bluefishing this morning from his Queen Mary out of Point Pleasant, but the first bonito of the season was caught along with chub mackerel. We know where the bluefish are, but they're too far offshore to do us any good. Capt. Lou Grazioso joined Bob Chervanak of Fairfield on his 32-ft. Scout for a canyon run this morning out of Waretown, and came across lots of blues feeding on sand eels 45 miles out. Tuna trolling from the Spencer to the Wilmington was no good. I cast a popper in the Point Pleasant surf after sun-up, and was surprised to hook a small blue on the teaser during my second cast. I released two more blues in the 5-pound class, one of which blasted the Tactical Anglers Bomb, Jr. popper practically in the wash. Switching to metal in order to better present the teaser they seemed to want, didn't produce any hits. Capt. Jim McFarland, of Big Mac at Green Harbor, Ma. had another hot day of jigging at Wildcat Knoll as the Walt Woznay party from Wayne caught over 175 fish up to 36-inch pollock.
