Captain's Focus

The first northern Shore mako reported was weighed at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina today when Robbie Siciliano of Neptune and John Hoffmann from Belford brought in a 335-pounder on Smokin Reel. I heard a skipper reporting on the VHF today about catching lots of blue sharks in the Fingers, where water temperatures were a mild 64 to 65 degrees. After the first two days of the South Jersey Shark Tournament in Cape May, the leader in the Big Money Mako Division was Relentless with a 338-pounder that stands to be worth $105,750.The overall biggest fish is a 654-pounder (no species listed) on Dumb & Dumber. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den, continues to marvel at all the big bass coming into the Den from the north. Mike Dannon had a 35-pounder and Al Bridger from Philadelphia a 45-pound bass on bunker spoons. Matthews is also happy with fluking in Shark River. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported a pick of blues from 5 to 12 pounds all day today. The Jamaica from Brielle had tough Friday day and night trips for blues, but Saturday bounced back with choppers up to 17 pounds. The Saturday night trip produced a pick of blues on bait up to a 16.5-pounder for Todd Carr of Bayonne. Capt. Rob Semkewyc had a good pick of big blues in Raritan Bay today, but no bass -- and will switch his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands to fluke next weekend. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant had much improved bluefish jigging on Saturday after a  poor Friday, but had to go offshore to get into some up-and-down bluefishing today. They're sold out on Monday. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had up to 15 blues jigging on Saturday along with one bass. The Magic Hours trip was good for 18-to-35-pound bass on bunkers. Bob Correll of Bay Head and I joined Mike Heaney of Allenwood for a late afternoon bass trip out of Crystal Point Yacht club, but we never saw a bunker flip on the way north. We ended up north of Sandy Hook, where we were able to snag a few bunkers at times. Correll released one striper and lost another that pulled the hook. Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights had his father, Hal of Haddon Heights, out on his small boat Saturday as they got both bass and blues in the bay. Bass of 40-and-42 inches topped the catch as they also released five. Hugh Mura and his son fished Saturday with Capt. Ralph Layrer on his Last Lady from Belmar, but live-baiting was slow. Mura caught one of the two bass hooked,a 44-incher. Capt. Stan Zagleski picked away today at fluke in the bay with his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. Some fares had up to three or four keepers, and the pool went to a 4 11/16-pounder.
