Captain's Focus

The first sharking report came in from Jim's Tackle in Cape May. They held their annual tournament last weekend that was won by a 205-pound thresher which was the only qualifier. Some makos were caught, but none met the 150-pound minimum for them. Drum are abundant in Delaware Bay, and weakfish are starting to show at jetties.  Capt. Stan Zagleski reports a pick of fluke in Raritan Bay the last two days as a big swell has made it too rough to fish the ocean with his Elaine B. from Highlands. He notes that anglers working their baits and jigs have been doing best. Mike Naipawer of Blomingdale and Dennis Ziober of Port Reading tied for Monday's pool with 5 5/8-pound fluke. Carmine Rutledge of Newark boated a 7 7/16-pounder today to beat Jack Deckert from Blairstown with a 6 1/2-pounder for the pool. Capt. Ron Santee finally has his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands running fluke trips, and an 8.3-pounder was boated Sunday. Also at that port, Capt. Rob Semkewyc said he had hot action with blues today, including some gators, on his Sea Hunter -- but no stripers. Capt. Sal Cursi reported catching stripers in the back of the bay Monday afternoon even though he had to fish through a lot of blues to get them. Capt. Mike Greene , of Lucky Stripes Charters had a great striper trip on live bunkers today, releasing about 30 bass, while he weighed a 50-inch, 49.1-pounder at Fisherman's Headquarters in Ship Bottom. Capt. Frank Tenore, of Fins On Feathers at Leonardo, was surprised by a black drum of over 90 pounds on the weekend. Capt. Vinny Makfinsky, of Morning Dew at Perth Amboy, couldn't find any bass during Saturday's NE blow for the Perth Amboy Moose Lodge, before switching to fluke. There were plenty of them in shallower waters, but only one in ten was a keeper. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's reports lots of bluefish in all sizes being caught on bunker in the surf, along with a few bass. Kevin Malone weighed a 38-inch bass that went 17.75 pounds.   Betty & Nick's reported a 15 3/4-pound bass and an 8-pound blue for Brian Ward, who said he also released another bass plus blues and dogfish on bunker at Gillikin's in the park.
