Cat. Stan Zagleski couldn't wait to switch to sea bass with his Elaine B. from Bahrs in Highlands -- and he was very pleased with today's results. There were plenty of large bass among the shorts in 55 to 60 feet. Bob Clay of Bellville won the pool with a 4-pounder. There were schools of bunker off the beaches as he rode home, while a whale provided a show blasting them off the bathing beach at Sandy Hook. Zagleski switches again on Friday to fluke.The sailing time for Friday, Saturday and Sunday is moved up to 6 a.m. to get an early start to the Bug Light -- the traditional early hot spot. The Mimi VI from Point Pleasant has moved into the Sea Devil's slip, and will sail open for sea bass Thursday and Friday at 7 a.m. The Jamaica from Brielle reported very good bluefish jigging for choppers up to 12 pounds today. Capt. John Kolias said he loaded up his Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands with bunkers today, but the striper bite was poor. Bluefish, plus one barely legal striper were boated after covering 56 miles. Allen Riley of South Plainfield couldn't do a thing with bunker and lures this morning in the Monmouth Beach surf, but clam produced stripers of 23, 22, and 20 inches plus a 28-inch keeper. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported lots of small; blues in the surf, along with an occasional large chopper. Capt. Jim McFarland said codfishing wasn't hot today for the Bill Porter party from Jackson on Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma., but the six anglers still caught 52 cod plus haddock limits -- and topped off with a 74-pound halibut.
