Captain's Focus

It appears the first Governor's Cup Surf Fishing Tournament to be run in the spring should be a big success as there's fine weather predicted and the surf is calming after getting roiled during Friday's south winds. It was only suitable for surfers today, but should produce bluefish and, hopefully, some stripers on Sunday. The blues weighed  in at Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park today were on the smallish side, but jumbos have been around and could return with better conditions. Those not entered yet can sign up at 5 in the morning at Pavilion 1 in Island Beach State Park. Big blues were a problem in Raritan Bay today, though Capt. Stan Zagleski said he also had a good catch of keeper bass among all the choppers caught on Elaine B from Highlands. Ron Tabor of New Egypt won the pool with a 25-pound striper. The Elaine B. switches to sea bass on Tuesday. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported a slow pick of 5-to-10-pound blues on hammered jigs and Krocs in the morning, presumably in the ocean, followed by a hot bite of yelloweyes in the afternoon. Manasquan River continues to host good quantities of bluefish. Bob Correll of Bay Head took his wife, Mary Agnes, and son Kevin out on his Boston Whaler as they threw poppers in the river during the middle of the day to catch 10 blues. Mary Agnes topped the catch with a 10-pounder. Fisherman's Headquarters in Ship Bottom weighed a 26.5-pound striper that Steve George of Berkeley Striper Club plugged on an SP Minnow at mid-island . Capt. Jim McFarland had a good day with his Big Mac out of Green Harbor, Ma. as the season's first halibut, a 60-pounder, was boated along with limits of cod to 16 pounds plus haddock.
