Captain's Focus

Though the main focus has been on clamming for stripers in Raritan Bay, and both live bunkers and trolling Stretch plugs have also been producing bass, Dave Lilly of Hazlet found Tony Maja medium bunker spoons were even more effective Saturday afternoon as he trolled limits of bass over 20 pounds in the back of the bay. Lily was out again today for more good trolling action, though it wasn't as fast as yesterday.Marcelo and Steve Remotti ran their SSBAPA out of Morgan Marina yesterday to troll Stretch 25 plugs for four legal bass up to 19 pounds at Round Shoal, but clamming didn't produce.  Also at that marina, Capt. Joe Massa noted that yesterday's last bass on live bunker from his My Three Sons weighed in at 28 pounds. Most party boats didn't sail on Easter Sunday, but Capt. Scott Hilliard ran his traditional Easter morning trip with Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands. Striper clamming was slower than yesterday, possibly due to what he said was a southeast wind, but four or five keepers plus seven or eight shorts were caught.  At Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, Bob Matthews reports improved winter flounder fishing, while some legal blackfish are being caught in Point Pleasant Canal. The Golden Eagle opened their striper season with slow fishing but added a couple of flounder. Several bass up to a 34-incher were taken on the second trip. Capt. Jim McFarland, of Big Mac at Green Harbor, Ma. fished 250-foot depths to put the Jim Donnelly party from West Chester, Pa. plus Dave Roberts of Sewaren, into 150 haddock plus redfish. Fresh Jersey clams produced over 100 cod and haddock on Saturday for the Willie Downs charter from Trenton. Art Berkman of Pompton Plains reported hot striper fishing today in Raritan Bay with Capt. Rick Woerner on Carnivore from Brown's in Keyport Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park had reports of a couple of small bass being caught in the surf on Saturday.    Coast Boating School has the following upcoming boating safety classes, leading to the required boating certificate, as follows.
