Though the winter flounder season opened in N.Y. waters on April 1, the info I received about striped bass opening there at the same time was wrong. Stripers become legal in N.Y. on April 15. Of course that doesn't make much difference right now due to very low water temperatures. There have been some rumors of short bass being taken on worms from N.J. Raritan Bay shorelines, but the first keeper has yet to be weighed in.
Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, reports a very few winter flounder have been caught on worms at both ends of Point Pleasant Canal. The water temperature in the canal is getting closer to the 40 degrees that might get fishing started there. Â
The Beach N Boat Tournament got underway after midnight when a few hardy souls cast into the Beach Haven surf after fortifying themselves at the Ingleside Inn bar. There was a quick retreat to more comfortable climes, and the entry board remains retained its virginity.  Â
