Captain's Focus

The N.J. blackfish season opens tomorrow, April 1, for a one-month run with a bag limit of four tog at a 15-inch minimum. Don't expect anything close to shore in the present frigid waters. Only the ASMFC survey catches blackfish from shore at this time of year -- and they're come up with some unbelievable numbers for shore fishermen when even boaters can't catch them. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar Marina will be seeking tog in deep waters since one was hooked in over 200 feet last week. They're more likely to continue catching a pick of cod and ling until there's more warming of the waters.  Bob Matthews did have a positive report from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, as winter flounder started hitting over the weekend. He noted that some didn't make the 12-inch minimum, but there were enough keepers to make the effort worthwhile. The starting date for the N.J. sea bass season listed in a recent blog was incorrect. It opens on May 19, not in April. New York opens their seasons for both winter flounder and striped bass tomorrow (April 1). Their fluke season will run from May 17 to Sept. 21, with the same 18-inch minimum and five-fish bag as in New Jersey.
