Only the dedicated fished in the northeaster preceding today's snowstorm. I was in Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant at mid-morning when Mickey Sweeney came in to repair the hook on his metal after catching school stripers at Bay Head where gannets were diving in the surf. He said it was getting too rough and cold, but the possibility of catching even a small bass under those circumstances was enough to get me going.
It was a real northeast blow when I arrived, the tide was dropping out, and there were no birds -- but I caught a schoolie on my second cast into the white water with a Run-Off Sand Eel 2-ounce jig with a white bucktail hook. That was enough to keep me there for awhile, and I added two other small bass while also striking back on a fish that pulled a few inches of line off the reel on the momentary contact. Another angler there hadn't caught anything, and both Sweeney and Jerry Lasko also didn't do anything during brief efforts. A mixture of rain and snow had just started when I gave it up due to receding water in that spot. Earlier I had talked to fly rod pro Bill Massey at another spot in Bay Head after he had managed to catch a small bass on fly while casting into the increasing northeast wind.Â
Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported small bass being caught in that area on metal and teasers.
