It's very difficult to put out a fresh fishing report when we have been spending way more time tied fast to the dock than we have spent fishing. For the last several weeks, actually since the passing of hurricane Sandy, our time on the water has been very limited and the winds seem to never really stop. I can honestly say that I have never seen a stretch of winds like we have been seeing over the past several weeks including a stretch where it blew Northeast 15 to 25 for a couple of weeks solid without stop.

As a direct result of the super storm and the stretch of windy weather that has followed, the water in and around the lower end of the Delaware Bay and as far off as the edges of the canyons have all been effected. We have encountered strange current directions in the way the tides have been flowing, the water clarity has suffered immensely, and the fishing with the exception of the Stripers has been next to nil. Even on the days that we have been able to get away from the docks the water has been so dirty that we were barely able to get any Tautog to bite at all. Even the Stripers that have been around have shied away from the Mouth of the Bay around the magical rips that they would normally be feeding due to the water clarity. You know its bad when you lower a crab or a live bait into the water and it disappears within a foot of the surface.

I have this website that has become one of my favorites it's called windfinder and it googles easy, I use Rehoboth beach as a reference point. I urge everyone to check out this site as a tool to help you plan your fishing trips. For a while this site looked to me like it may have been offline and wasn't refreshing, it showed the same wind speed and direction day after day after day and it was all northeast. The site was fine it's just what we were dealt - wind, wind, and more wind. We finally had a change in direction from the easterlies late last week but even though the wind had come around to the northwest and the west it still had a velocity in excess of twenty five knots. We stayed tied up again to the docks fishing only on Friday with less than favorable results due to the ground swell and the dirty water.

I said in my last post that "the wind will stop it usually does" and I firmly believe that this will be the case. Right now all my weather tools including windfinder look promising for the upcoming weekend and maybe we will finally get the long deserved break we have needed and be able to get in a good weekend of fishing here at the Wharf. We will be fishing for both the Stripers and for the Tog. I will be running the Tog trip and we are scheduled to depart the docks at 7:00 a.m. we supply the crabs. The Striper trips are scheduled to depart at 8:00 a.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday are the days we will go. Our next Long-Range trip will be Saturday December 8th for the Tilefish.
