Fisherman's Wharf Fishing Report

Fisherman’s Wharf Fishing Report December 10, 2009

fish lewesIt's hard to write a fishing report when you are only getting out a couple trips a week but with the weather and the business being the way it has been here in our region that's about the best we can do. I did manage to get out for the Tog twice last week with just a handful at the rail and the fishing was best described as fair. Striper fishing on the other hand was red hot on several occasions for those that took advantage of the weather windows.

fish lewesEvery time we turn around this fall the wind is blowing from one direction or the other and not just a gentle breeze. Gale winds seem to have camped out along the coast and have been giving us a relentless pounding at least a few times each week. In the wake of all the wind, we have been plagued with choppy seas and dirty water around the mouth of the Delaware Bay making fishing somewhat of a challenge. Fortunately we have had a few intermittent breaks in weather systems that have allowed us to see some decent fishing when we have been able to get out.

fish lewesI had the pleasure of getting out on Friday and then again last Monday. The wind would blow the hair out of your head most of the weekend and we were tied up again for both the Saturday and Sunday trips. The two days we did get out however were very pleasant on the water with light winds and calm seas. Each trip with just the bare minimum of fisherman on board we managed a respectable catch with Tog up to about eight pounds. Action each day was typical with the fish biting on certain phases of the hard running tides.

fish lewesOur 2009 season is rapidly coming to an end with this coming weekend being our last scheduled trips for the 09 year with the Tog. Hopefully Mother Nature will give us a little break and we will be able to get out and catch a few more fish to close out the season. As it stands there are no more trips scheduled after this coming Monday December 14th. It is possible that we may throw a few special trips for Tog or Stripers out after Christmas depending on how the weather goes. I will post any updates here as well as the special trip link from the home page. Long Range trips after the first of the year have been put on hold with the mandated closure on the Black Bass and depending on the 2010 rules may not resume until sometime this Spring.

fish lewesAs most of you are already aware the National Marine Fisheries Service imposed and immediate closure early October with the Black Sea Bass. This ruling was based on "faulty science" by their own admission and has unfortunately set the precedent for similar closures in the future. At this time the same people responsible for this closure are trying to determine the new regulations for 2010 and I'm here to tell you your not going to like any of them. I strongly urge anyone that cares about recreational fishing to get involved and voice your opinion on the way these rules are coming about and what it means for everyone that just wants to try and catch a few fish. The way this is leading it won't be long before we won't be able to fish for any type of fish whatsoever. Call or write your Senators and Representatives and relay your frustration. They are systematically shutting down our access to stocks of fish that they are quick to say have been totally rebuilt.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would like to book a private charter for Stripers or Tog in the upcoming weeks please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Thanks for reading and have a Happy Holiday Season!
