Fisherman’s Wharf Fishing Report October 21, 2009

Not a whole lot to report this past week here at the Wharf unless you are interested in lots of wind, big waves, extreme high tides, and an abundance of rain. I've said before that Mother Nature can do a much better job at managing her fisheries than any management plan ever could and it was never more obvious then it was just this past week.
After several days tied fast to the dock we finally got out again on Tuesday 10/20 to try our luck with the Tog. What we found was plenty of dirty water and a pretty typical Tog bite centered around the swift moving tides. The fish bit good for a while and we managed a decent catch and plenty of action with the throwbacks while the fish were cooperating. While the high hook only landed five decent keepers everyone but a couple of guys that weren't in tune with the bite wound up with more than enough for supper and we caught a lot of fish when they were biting. As a bonus catch we even landed our first citation sized Striper for the '09 fall season. After sitting at the dock for so long it was nice just to get out and see a flat calm ocean for a change. All the fish we caught were a nice bonus!
While all the nasty weather we have had certainly has not done us any favors from a business point of view, we are starting to see the water temperatures take a dip and it seems as though there are some fish on the move. Not only have the first Stripers started to hit the docks here in Lewes the last couple days, I also fished a wreck yesterday that I had fished just two weeks ago when all we caught were a bunch of Triggerfish and Sea Bass. On this trip the wreck was teaming with Tog and the fish that we caught felt cold. I was out again today 10/21 with yet another small group of anglers and the fishing was very similar to yesterday with lots of small fish biting on the tide. Top hook would land about six or seven keepers and there was nothing really big landed but it was much better Tog fishing than I had seen before all the bad weather we had last week.
As most of you know all too well, Mother Nature has dished out more then her fair share of rotten weather for us this fall, but when we do get a break in the weather it seems as though we will be able to show you some fish; both Tog and Stripers. I am going to continue with the seven day a week schedule now wreck fishing for Tog and we will start fishing for the stripers daily this weekend also. Wreck trips depart the docks at 7:00 a.m. and the Striper trips will depart at 8:00. We really haven't had too much of a problem with too many people these days between the weather and the Sea Bass closure but we will certainly go out with just a few patrons on any pretty day. I strongly suggest that if you are interested in Striper fishing through the week you show up at the docks by seven o'clock That way if there is just a few people around the docks that want to go fishing you can make the regular all day trip. When these Stripers do turn on good here in the mouth of the Bay it is entirely possible that with just a handful of people for both trips we will combine everybody and run a combo trip just to get you out if there is just a handful of people that show up. We are going to try our best to get you fishing every day the weather is good if you make the trip.
