Captain's Focus

I mentioned a while ago that this has been the foggiest spring I can remember. Well, we can add to that the rainiest June I can remember. It is really putting a hamper on the fishing. The bay fishing gets crippled by heavy rain as it throws the salinity levels out of whack and it takes a few tides after the rain ends to get back in synch. And of course, storminess isn't really great for the ocean fisherman either. Still, I expect stellar months in July and August. Water temps are right where they should be or even a tad warmer than usual and after this next round of storminess, I expect to see some clear sailing.

On to the fishing front, the Stripers are still to be had but with greater difficulty than was earlier. They should hang around as long as the Bunker do, but you probably want to focus your efforts early/late in low light conditions. When conditions are right, fluking is pretty fine. Both the bay and ocean are producing with a higher number of keepers coming from the ocean. Barnegat Ridge has been producing some large Fluke for a while. Still, that is a long run, so make sure to check the weather. Bluefish are also pretty thick on the Ridge. Weakfish are showing up in some numbers now. Sea Bass fishing was good inshore, but it seems as if the decent fish have been picked so head a little deeper if you want some nice humpbacks. Offshore, Sharking is quite good for Blues and some Makos to be had. And I have heard of quite a few Bluefin down Cape May way, but nothing local just yet. But it should not be long.
