Captain's Focus

Some significant changes are currently underway to be noted. First, the mid-shore "hot spots" are beginning to produce fish. Barnegat Ridge and Resor Wreck have both produced Bluefin Tuna and of course, some shark during the past week. Also, an unconfirmed report of King Mackerel at the Ridge. As we move into July, these areas become quite exciting with the possibility of many different pelagic species through the rest of the summer. I will be on a trip to the Ridge this Sunday and will post how we do.

On the inshore front, some bunker pods are still around and some Stripers are to be had, still that fishery is really tailing off with the majority of the fish now "shorts" and being caught on clam as opposed to bunker. Fluke fishing is very good in the bay when the right drift exists. Still the keeper ratio if abysmal. It should be noted that the Fluke in the bay seem to be migrating from the West side to the East side of the bay. I suspect that this is because the West side bay temps are just too warm and the Fluke's internal clock is telling them to start heading toward the inlet so they are ready for the Fall offshore migration. The Ocean is starting to pick up a bit for the flounder but it is still not great fishing. You need to find warmer water and/or structure to do well. Hills 4-5 miles off the beach in around 70 ft. seem best at the moment.

On another positive note, you can start grass shrimp chumming for Weakfish in the bay. It is funny, the Weakfish "sharpies" are among the most tight-lipped group of fishermen you will have meet. Very hard to get info other than first hand. As is always the case, if after the Weakfish, staying away from boat traffic is paramount. Off second importance is the time of day. While you can catch fish at any time, most of the time the Weakie bite is best in low light conditions (early morning or towards dusk).

Small "Taylor" Blues are everywhere in the bay. Not too hard to locate and tons of fun for the kids. For Slammers you will have to head out, the Mudhole is one popular spot, though you don't have to make that far of a trip to get into them.

Due to a change, I now have an opening on July 4 and am offering a "Special". 4 Fisherman, $400, 7hours Fluke Fishing in the Ocean. If you are interested Reserve now at www.firstcatchfishing.com/reserve.shtml
