9/7/14: Depending on the conditions, the drift and wind were the difference this week on where we fished. Any fisherman knows it's hard to hold bottom or to jig in the deeper water when your drift is 1 knot plus. So when the wind was up, shallower is where we went, and when there was no drift, we went deeper. Either way we caught fish, sometimes more short fish and other times, it was "The Valley of the Giants." Here are the braggers, I mean pool winners: First off was a dead heat tie with two 6.1-lbers, owners were Mike Jacobs of Philadelphia, PA and Bill Connelly of Marlton, NJ. Next was Tim Horner of Cream Ridge, NJ with another 6-lber and George Dickson of Whiting, NJ with a nice 6.12-lber, and Mike Villanova of Waretown, NJ with a 5.2-lb flattie. Bob Thomas of Manasquan, NJ won with a 4-lber and (Frosty) Dave Frost of Barnegat, NJ won (plus got out of his dry spell, as of others) with a pair of 5.5-lbers! Kenny D of Philadelphia, PA also took the money with a 4.6-lb fluke. Hey, the two charters this week were great! The fishing was good but the catching was a little slow! But a big thanks goes to Bob Dobbs with the Knights of Columbus, you guys found some fluke late in the trip, but the weather was a little sporty, and a fast drift was a issue. Thanks, Bob, for getting everyone together! Also we had General Aire, and I'm telling you, if we got stranded out at sea for a week, we would still have enough food and drink! Thank you Vincent Cella and Paul for that fun trip, and we thank god for the safe passage from the storms that were around that night! Awesome cloud formations! Hey, what about the mahis around the boat this week! John Weber of Beach Haven West, NJ landed a beautiful 15-lb bull mahi this past week. And the next day we saw two the same size, but the fish won that day! What a beautiful sight seeing them with their brilliant colors, swimming around the boat, inshore this close! The water was so clear this past week you could see 60 ft in 80 ft of water. We also caught a ribbon fish, which is a nasty fish with huge outer fangs, which we released. This is the big week! Northeastly weather early in the week, along with a full moon! When this passes we should have some fabulous fishing. This little blow going by shouldn't hurt us at all. Just a little nasty chop, but hopefully no big swell. Pick the best day to fish and look up the weather on the website, and hit inshore forecast. If it says 20 to 25 and gust to 30 knots, chances are we are not sailing. Use your better judgement and pick a better day. Sea bass season is closed until October 18. So its all about drift fishing until Sept 27. There are a lot of fish out there and we have less then three weeks to enjoy the opportunity to catch these wonderful flounder! Let's do it! See you at sea, Gina
