FLUKE LIKE A CHAMPION!!!
Thursday, September 4th
Location: Ambrose
Tide: Low 10:04am
Water Temp: 71.2 Degrees
Wind:
Moon Phase: 76% Full
Morning observations:
- The 10 1/2 pound fish that was caught yesterday really perked people up. There was over a $100 jump in the monthly pool and most anglers are prepared for another beast to be landed.
- Gulp Grubs and strip bait have been working well, and this morning I see multiple people with squid, mackerel strip, and bluefish strips.
- Three Flukemasters today; Wayne Smith and Carm Patullo and Alan Abramson.
What I’m watching: Sinker up!!! If you want to catch fluke right now you need to put weight on and be on the bottom. 6, 8, 10 ounces!!!
They said it: “You have to be in it to win it!†— Unnamed customer commenting on the angler who caught the 10 pounder yesterday not being in the pool.
MVP Candidate Paul Alesi is America’s newest sex symbol. Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift all showing their off their favorite heartthrob fluker.

NEW GoPro Videos from Tuesday 8/2 – The depths of Ambrose
This is a compilation of fluke attacks in Ambrose Channel on Tuesday. I sent the camera down and basically dead sticked it for an hour. The video is a little long at 19 minutes. I may go back and make it shorter.
See all our GoPro videos here.
Ambrose Channel Alert: We spend a good amount of time in Ambose Channel during this part of the season, and as many of you know, Ambrose is a completely different animal than the most back bay anglers are used to:
- It is considerably deeper than the Reach Channel.
- Surface current and bottom current always run different from each other.
- You WILL get into a tangle! Sometimes with a guy on the other end of the boat. Don’t scream when tangled! Be patient and wait for deckhand assistance.
- There will be ship traffic. When the horn sounds to pick up your lines, It means pick them up!
- Sinker up! The 3 oz Spro isn’t going to cut it.
- Bring a rod that is heavy enough to handle a heavy sinker; 8 ounces or more.
- Bring heavy sinkers.; 8 ounces and up. If you do not have them, we sell them on the boat for .25 an ounce.
- A sinker attached to a slider clip is not a good idea. I know a good amount of anglers like to use this technique, but it is not recommended for this type of fishing. The reason being is, and I see it all the time including many times today, someone will pull up your hook and you will have no idea that your line is actually up because the sinker is still on the bottom. You need to feel the bottom and feel the fluke when the strike.
- Mentally prepare yourself for difficult conditions. Like I said earlier, tangles are going to happen. It’s all part of the show.
First Drift: Fluking does NOT get any better than this!!! Total fluke beat down.
- Tom D is high hook with 2 keepers.
- Dallas Kirchoff landed the heaviest, weighing 5 pounds. Earlier in the drift Dallas snagged a small peanut bunker. He hooked it on for bait and moments later landed the baby beast. NICE!
- Right now everything is working.
Second Drift: Another good drift. Fireball fishing with some keepers mixed in.
Third Drift: We are on the tide change right now and the conditions have become just a little difficult with tangles. Top current and bottom currents going opposite ways. While the fishing has slowed somewhat, it remains acceptable. It’s going to take a little while to get the outgoing water.
Fourth Drift: Things have slowed considerably since the tide change. We were picking away at the fish with an occasional keeper coming over the rail, but that hasn’t been the case over the last hour or so.
- High Hook is Joe P. with 3 keepers.
Fifth Drift: The fishing picked up with many anglers experiencing drop and reel fishing. The down side is the ratio is terrible. Only a couple keepers came out of it.
Postgame: Today’s fishing was good, very good at times, but we suffered from a subpar keeper ratio.
