Life After Fluke Schedule – Beginning September 28th
The 2014 Fluke Season closes on September 27th. Beginning on the 28th our schedule will be as followed:
Wednesday – Porgies
Friday- Striped bass/Bluefish
Saturday – Porgies
Sunday – Porgies
Today’s schedule: We will be pulling out of the slip at 7:30am in pursuit of the keeper fluke.

Morning observations:
- Where did the summer go?! Labor Day. . . Ughhhhh
- There is a little bit of a Flukewatch hangover on the boat. The coffee can not brew fast enough.
- It’s a new month. Who will end up on the leaderboard today?
- There were some big fish caught this week. Look for a beast to come up soon!
- Did I mention that we need more coffee?
- Two Flukemasters on the boat today; Carmine Mangini and newly crown champion Doug Kay.
What I’m watching: Whose name will appear first on the big board. Doug Kay was the only name that made it to the board last month. Can it happen again?

Ambrose Channel Alert: We spend a good amount of time in Ambose Channel during this part of the season, and as many of you know, Ambrose is a completely different animal than the most back bay anglers are used to:
- It is considerably deeper than the Reach Channel.
- Surface current and bottom current always run different from each other.
- You WILL get into a tangle! Sometimes with a guy on the other end of the boat. Don’t scream when tangled! Be patient and wait for deckhand assistance.
- There will be ship traffic. When the horn sounds to pick up your lines, It means pick them up!
- Sinker up! The 3 oz Spro isn’t going to cut it.
- Bring a rod that is heavy enough to handle a heavy sinker; 8 ounces or more.
- Bring heavy sinkers.; 8 ounces and up. If you do not have them, we sell them on the boat for .25 an ounce.
- A sinker attached to a slider clip is not a good idea. I know a good amount of anglers like to use this technique, but it is not recommended for this type of fishing. The reason being is, and I see it all the time including many times today, someone will pull up your hook and you will have no idea that your line is actually up because the sinker is still on the bottom. You need to feel the bottom and feel the fluke when the strike.
- Mentally prepare yourself for difficult conditions. Like I said earlier, tangles are going to happen. It’s all part of the show.
The view from the bottom of Ambrose:
I sent the Gopro down to the bottom of Ambrose. It is a cold, dark place with very little light. I did have a fluke drivebye, but other than that, very difficult to see. Here are a couple stills. One is when the camera hit bottom, and the second is a fluke blowing by the camera enroute to a spearing that is barely visible on the top of the photo.
First Drift: BOOM BOOM POW!!!!!!! Jimmy Hughes who almost knock Doug Kay off the board yesterday with a 7 pound fish, came back today and landed a 7 lb 3 oz fluke!!!! WOW!!!!! The bar has been set.
- A very good drift once the initial pandemonium passed and everyone became acclimated to the conditions of Ambrose.
- There were a few nice fish caught including the 7 pounder.
- High hook was John Nestor with 2 keepers.
Second Drift: Not as good as the first, but acceptable.
Third Thru Sixth Drifts: We are slow picking at mostly shorts. For whatever reason, they are not biting like they have for the last 5 days. We are also suffering from a poor keeper ratio, but it is what it is. It can’t be fireball everyday.
Postgame: The keeper ratio was much lower than it has been as of late. Highlight of the day was Jimmy Hughes catching the 7 lb 3 oz fluke. High hook was newly crown Champion Doug Kay with 4 keepers.
