Captain's Focus

And so it begins again.

Canyon Runner Sportfishing got their 2011 canyon season off to a solid start this weekend and already have 3 overnighters in the books with solid catches on all three.
On Friday, June 10 Capt. Mark DeBlasio, Capt. Deane Lambros and mate Zack Ryba took an open boat trip down to the Spencer Canyon and trolled 4 very nice yellowfin in the 30-50 pound class on Friday before settling in for a night of sharking. The drifted in 50-80 fathoms at night and quickly nailed a 100 pound mako that they let go hoping for a bigger one that never came. They did pick a nice brown shark as well during the night. The next morning saw no action at all for the entire fleet and very little if any bait or life.

With a lack of the life that we like to see to the south, on Sunday, June 12 both boats headed to the Hudson Canyon and what a great decision that was.

They stopped first at the traditional inshore Bluefin grounds and it was go time!!!! In just over an hour of fishing both boats had their over and under. The 48 Viking on another open boat trip with Capt. Mark and Capt. Deane and Kevin Myler as the mate were 11 for 15 on Bluefin from 30 to 100 pounds.

The 60 Ritchie Howell joined in on the fun shortly thereafter with Capts. Phil Dulanie and Jay Richardella with non other then William Howell (Ritchie Howell’s youngest son). The Matt Magdison charter enjoy very quick action going 5 for 7 in less than an hour.

Of course both boats tagged and release most of the fish only keeping their limit.

They then headed to the Hudson Canyon where the afternoon troll bit saw the 48 Viking go 5 for 6 on yellowfin with most around 30” and one up to 40 pounds. The 60’ Ritchie only have one shot and put a 30” fishin the boat before the night sharking adventure began.

On the drift the action got good for boat with the 60’ Ritchie nailing 3 makos up of 70#, 110#, and 200# - they had the 110# first so kept that and released the 200# and also had a couple bluesharks. The 48’ had a 100# mako and few bluesharks and also 8 tiles fish right before dark.

Up on the morning troll the 48 nailed a white marlin in, believe it or not, 66 degree water and the 60’ went 5 for 5 on yellowfin – all in the 30’ class.

In total 16 for 21 on Bluefin, 11 for 15 on yellowfin, 4 makos and 1 white marlin for both boats.
