Captain's Focus

Maybe Wednesday’s day troll on our 60’ Ritchie Howell tops the trips for the week – or maybe not – it depends if you like marlin fishing. With the Pete Guaditis charter on the boat, Capt. Phil Dulanie, Capt. Mike Zajac and Capt. Hook headed to the Hudson Canyon for a one-day trolling trip. Arriving on the west wall around 5am they started in on a slow pick of yellowfin putting 5 in the boat by 7am and 14 in the boat by 9am. With the charter more than happy with that many tuna they released another for a total of 15 and then put out some bigger lures Capt. Hook brought back from his 8 years in Kauai, Hawaii – it worked. Within minutes of having out some of the bigger lures an abalone shelled kona head got popped from the rigger but no one saw the bite. Mike reeled in that lure to check it out and as soon as it was even with the long flat a big blue piled on the green streaker and it was game on.

Pete Guaditis fought her on a Penn International 50 and custom Canyon Runner rod from beginning to end and 1.5 hours into the battle she was along side the boat for pictures. Tossing the hook we removed from the mouth over her tail to get a measurement off the leader she taped out to 126 inches – not a bad fish – and Pete’s first ever so he went swimming back at the dock. Congratulations!!!
