They spent the night drfiting inshore of the southwest corner of the Hudson and pulled 1 mako. What was most interesting about this mako is that it was the exact same mako they caught in the Carteret canyon a week ago. You see Capt. Mark has been experimenting with a long line circle hook with a trace of wire (no one else we know even long liners combine long line circle hooks with wire) and this mako had the hook still in the corner of its mouth for last week (almost rusted out).
Up on the troll in the morning Capt. Mark heard the 60 Ritchie hooked up to a big-eye so he started working towards him but could not get lines in teh water due to all the small yellowfin and skip jack. They finally go so frustrated they put out the biggest spreader bar on the boat - a 17" Yamashite squid bar in pink/brown. It wasn't out more then 2 minutes when it was crushed and the fish proceeded to pull 400 yards of spectra off the Penn International 50VSW. One hour fifteen minutes later they darted a 74" big-eye. Back at the dock it weighted in at 260 pounds. One of the biggest big-eyes we've seen in a number of years. Oh yeah - they also caught a 20 pound mako and a total of 65 yellowfin.
